Working with Perilya
When working on large-scale industrial projects, having an experienced, trusted network of contractors and suppliers is vital to continued success. As a business with over 30 years of experience in the specialised services that are specific to the mining industry, Fabtec is proud of our continued collaboration with Perilya in Broken Hill.
Many of our staff have first-hand experience working on the local mines, including Scott, who began his career as an apprentice boilermaker on the NBHC Mine in 1983.
From equipment on the surface, to structural reinforcement in the deepest levels, old mines and new shafts, Fabtec has worked on projects for practically every department and area of the mines in Broken Hill and surrounding areas. This involvement resulted in a high level of understanding in what the optimal solution will be in most situations to provide the best return on investment, as well as prevent or minimise interruptions to operation of the mine.
Ensuring continued efficient operation is a primary goal in our projects, and where possible we ensure any work we do causes minimal-to-zero interruptions or shutdowns.
Fabtec’s experience with heavy steel production equipment and infrastructure is especially suited to the demands of the mining industry, and has made us a preferred partner for many years.

Building the Broken Hill Base Hospital
Few things are as vital to a regional community as a hospital. In early 1998, a brand new Broken Hill Hospital to service the Far West Local Health District, began construction. With the project already falling behind schedule, Scott and his team were requested to take over all management of steel production and installation so the project could begin its ambitious build and ensure the community could have their new hospital on-time, and with the necessary capabilities that were part of the initial scope.
Despite having no time to prepare the project and taking over at a point where things were already months behind, our team quickly streamlined the processes to ensure that the contractors already employed on the project had the materials necessary to start work as soon as possible. Prioritisation of production work-flow was a critical aspect to ensuring the construction could continue efficiently, as supplies had to be sourced from all over Australia, along with the critical construction expertise to ensure that the building could be built to specifications, including an architecturally-designed foyer that would serve as an important first impression to people visiting the hospital.
We were able to liaise with project draftsmen in Sydney, suggesting construction solutions, plans for approval, and working remotely together allowed for faster resolution. This enabled our team to remain on-site to troubleshoot and handle allocation of materials and manpower. As a major construction spanning nearly 2 years of commitment, the result has been a hospital that continues to service the increasing needs of the community and surrounding regions. The design included steel-clad radiography rooms, seven plant locations, and visual appeal elements that integrate stone, timber and steel into a modern structure. It is testament to the quality of the construction that the hospital has maintained an impressive functionality with minimal refitting more than twenty years later.

Saving a historic icon
Poppet-head of the South Broken Hill, Mine.
Our projects aren’t always about building something new. This project shows that even with a 100+ year-old structure, a smart approach can maintain much of the original material while updating the structural reliability of the headframe.

Fabtec was approached to restore the collapsing historic poppet-head at the old south mine. After decades of deterioration, the wooden structure had bowed and twisted to a point where it was unstable and in danger of collapse.
As one of the oldest wooden poppet-heads in Australia, the decision was made to preserve it as part of the history of the town.
The Poppet-head was more than a simple mining structure, but the age and historic value made it a monument to the hard work and tenacity that made Broken Hill such an important part of the mining boom during the era it was in use. Such a work ethic and motivation would also be needed to save it, due to the poor condition of much of the structure.
Fabtec decided to take on the project as a challenge, and to play a part in upholding the heritage of the city. Due to the high risk of collapsing the structure during the restoration process, Fabtec collaborated with an expert engineer with experience in this area. Together, we examined and consulted throughout the process, to find solutions to restore the structure and maintain as much of the original construction as possible, without compromising on long-term safety.
With careful planning, the structure was hydraulically lifted with cables to work the frame back into shape. After the poppet-head had settled, the frame was straightened and supports were added, with some replating of the steel as necessary. Much of the original framework was kept intact, and the poppet-head can stand tall for many years to come.
